'Embrace of Mateo's Blood'

Halloween is nigh. The days are getting shorter. The daily temperature is dropping. It's a great time of year to watch scary movies. One need not find such movies on Netfilx or RedBox, but can and should look no further than their neighborhood movie premiere.

One such film premiere is Embrace of Mateo's Blood, which was shown Saturday, October 10th at the Asian Delight restaurant in Fairfax, VA at 7:00 PM. Embrace of Mateo's Blood, the first of a series, was written, edited and directed by the incomparable June Daguiso, who is also the exhibitor of The World Music and International Film Festival.

Daguiso plays the titular Mateo, a vampire\demon on the loose, searching for young ladies to embrace, bite and possess. Blood from such young women is Mateo's only source of nourishment. It turns out Mateo has a deadly attraction for a pretty, young thing named Alexandria (Angel Gathers), who may be falling victim to the last stages of leukemia.

Mateo shows up everywhere. In bedrooms, in shadows. Heck, we even see Mateo at one point on the dance floor, black cape and all. (The Blacksploitation film Blackula anyone?)

Such stories as this need a John Wayne-like hero. Enter Roberto, played masterfully by DMV Indy Superstar Lee Sturdivant.

Roberto is one bad hombre: he's not only a Vietnam vet (he served with Mateo when the vampire was a mere human), but he's taken out six of the eight demons he's stalked. He carries "arsenic and holy water" as weapons. You just know Roberto is going to save the day---more than likely...you think.

Then again, you know things may go from bad to worse when Alexandria's grandfather, played by lovable DMV veteran, actor Jim Morris, tells Alexandria's mother, Sophia (Tammy Barboza), "Prayer is all you need."

Let's tally it up: You've got the DC police in pursuit of the "Blood Sucking" killer. A girl killed with an ice pick. A nasty nun, (well played by Assistant Director Natalie Esteve), a shady bartender, and an inquisitive reporter played by local star Comelita Payton.

Cisco Anderson's haunting score will keep you chilled and tensing to the thrills. The music sets an ominous, suspenseful mood. (Listen to a sample by clicking here.)

Embrace of Mateo's Blood is the first of a frighting, suspenseful series. Look over your shoulder and peep around corners for the next installment.
